We’re not the flashiest firm in the city but we are one of the most trusted. Lawyers consistently praise our transcripts as “the best in the business.”
I’m Cathy McCandless, court reporter, CEO of Coast Reporting, and professional “word wrangler.”
For nearly 30 years, I’ve been capturing stories across Vancouver and BC, some inspiring, some heartbreaking, and yes, some downright unbelievable. (If I had a dollar for every time someone said, “You must hear the craziest things”… well, let’s just say Chico, my dog, would have an even fancier bed.)
Beyond the transcripts, I’m a wife, mom, stepmom, and breast cancer survivor. Those chapters in life taught me grit, patience, and how to juggle chaos with grace, skills that surprisingly double as excellent CEO training.
Running a business isn’t all that different from running a household: things move fast, personalities clash, and snacks help.
At Coast, I’m not just focused on precision and professionalism (though those matter). I care about making clients feel supported, respected, and maybe even a little lighter by the time they leave. Because work is serious but it doesn’t always have to feel that way.

“When I say I use ‘one of those funny little typewriters you see in courtrooms,’ they finally get it—then usually ask, ‘You must hear a lot of weird stuff?’ Yes… yes, I do.”

We believe that the legal process doesn’t have to feel so… legal. That’s why, alongside reliable court reporting and top-tier transcripts, we offer something a little unexpected:

Our team of court reporters are all certified as official reporters by the provincial government and are also members of the British Columbia Shorthand Reporters Association.
